FAQs

What does USDA organic certification mean for coffee?

The USDA Organic certification means the coffee was grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides, on land free of chemical substances for at least three years, and verified by a third-party certifier. It is one of the strictest agricultural standards in the United States and applies to the entire growing process.

Does organic coffee contain more antioxidants than conventional?

Research suggests yes. Studies have found that organic coffee contains higher levels of chlorogenic acid and other phenolic compounds than conventionally grown coffee. These antioxidants are linked to reduced inflammation, better blood sugar regulation, and cardiovascular health benefits, so the difference is more pronounced in medium-roasted organic coffee.

What pesticides are typically used on conventional coffee crops?

Conventional coffee farming commonly uses synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides to maximize yields, with some of the pesticides being restricted or banned in some importing countries. Residues of these chemicals have been found in roasted coffee in multiple studies, which is one of the most important reasons to choose organic.

Is organic coffee worth the higher price?

For daily drinkers, yes, and if you've been asking is organic coffee good for you, the answer becomes clearer the more consistently you drink it. Organic coffee is good for you in ways that compound over time. The reduction in pesticide exposure over time is meaningful, and the antioxidant content is higher in organic varieties. Plus, choosing organic also protects the farmers and the lands where they grow coffee, supporting a farming system that is better for everyone involved.

Can organic coffee reduce inflammation and support heart health?

Is organic coffee better for you when it comes to heart health specifically? Research says yes. Organic coffee is better for you in more ways than just pesticide reduction. Research published in the European Heart Journal found that morning coffee drinkers were 31% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease. Organic coffee’s higher chlorogenic acid content may amplify these benefits compared to conventional alternatives.
